ramblings of a Jenna in Kazakhstan

ramblings of a Jenna in Kazakhstan

This morning I was awoken by my Kazakh roommate whispering me instructions. As it turned out our electricity had been shut off. Again. I know that right after the fall of the Soviet Union there were problems all over Kazakhstan in big cities including Almaty, with electricity, let alone food and supplies. While I was a Peace Corps Volunteer it was always touch and go with water or electricity in the village even in the new century. This morning was a reminder that I'm not in the USA, that thing are different here. Things that I have a right to be angry about in Washington DC, I have no right to get upset about here. Our electricity is out, but we have water this week. It's so easy to forget that I'm not in a western city here in Almaty. With all the western products that have burdgeoned here, with all the new fancy cars and buildings it's still Kazakhstan; a country filled with promise, with financial potential, and change. That's a lot.
